In Ascott's article I found a few things interesting.. Firstly he says that telematic art included things such as computer animation, hypermedia, image transfer, cybernetic structures, interactive media, etc. etc.. I think this is important because it shows that he believes there is many aspects to 'art' on the internet. Telematic art is it's own category in and of itself.
Another point that Ascott makes is that each individual computer interface is an aspect of the telematic unity (or embrace).. so much that being on your own interface automatically puts you in the presence of everyone else's interfaces. So when the question arises: is there love in the telematic embrace?.. I think that in a way we can answer, yes. The internet itself has become an important aspect of communication and unity among people across the world. And telematic art has done it's share of contributing to this unity.
I think this is demonstrated merely through the fact that the internet and telematic art has become such a large part of society.. especially in the time period between when this article was written and now.
Towards the end of the article Ascott makes the comment:
"The techonology of computerized media and telematic systems is no longer to be viewed simply as a set of rather complicated tools.. It can now be seen to support a whole new field of creative endeavor that is as radically unlike each of those established artistic genres as they are unlike each other."
I think this is so true and really demonstrates the 'embrace' of telematic art. It has gone beyond being just technology and moved into the realm of something more. And on the way it has established itself as it's own medium of art, and done so successfully.
